Award Winning Wineries

Loudoun County is a leading producer of wine grapes with nearly 1,000 acres under vine and over 50 wineries. But it’s not just quantity – it’s also world-class quality, as evidenced by a flurry of prestigious awards in recent years.

FUN FACT

Growing wine grapes was a mandate from the British crown for colonists that first landed in Virginia. That requirement was scuttled after it proved to be too difficult to maintain vines on the frontier.

Loudoun’s Unique Biodiversity For Wine

Located just one hour west of Washington, D.C., western Loudoun’s rolling hills and bucolic vineyards are reminiscent of the winemaking regions of Spain and France.

Loudoun’s mild weather, rich soil and 50-plus wineries can support many popular varietals as well as obscure grapes like Petit Manseng, Tannat and, of course, Fer Servadou. These uncommon grapes are yielding outstanding results, including Chrysalis Vineyards, Hillsborough Vineyards and Fabbioli Cellars.

Whether tradition or cutting edge, Loudoun’s wineries have something for everyone.

DID YOU KNOW?

Virginia wine making really took off after a Virginia wine made from original American grapes was named “Best Red Wine of all Nations” at the Vienna World’s Fair in 1873.

Stay and Play Awhile

Wineries are a great day-trip destination, but they also serve as a magnet for people who want to experience more of Loudoun has to offer.

Most of the county’s dozens of wineries are located within a short drive of farm-to-table restaurants, hiking trails for any skill level, or overnight accommodations including bed and breakfasts and country resort living.

Loudoun’s wineries also provide the perfect backdrop for special days, including weddings, reunions, business meetings and awards ceremonies.
