Greg and Sue Harrison, owners of Brookfield Dairy Farm, specialize in raising dairy cattle. The couple sells raw and pasteurized milk, butter, cream, and cheese straight from the farm to customers through their herd share program. Weather permitting, Brookfield Dairy Farm offers fresh homemade ice cream from their ice cream trailer which has grown into a local favorite.
The couple raises registered Brown Swiss Cattle specifically for the docile demeanor of the breed and the high-protein dairy it produces. “We chose to get back into the dairy industry about four years ago after our daughter, Eleanor, raised a Brown Swiss cow through one of her 4-H projects,” said Mr. Harrison. “We fell in love with the breed.” This type of cattle can be bred to carry the A2A2 gene, which produces milk that is more easily digested.
Around the same time their daughter was involved with Loudoun County 4-H, the couple noticed customers in the area looking for milk products from local producers. They decided to fill the need. Mr. Harrison grew up on Brookfield Farm, and he was excited to get back to his farming roots.
“We enjoy interacting with these adorable animals and receiving the love they give back to us,” said Mr. Harrison. “And who doesn’t like ice cream?” added Mrs. Harrison.
Brookfield Dairy Farm is located just south of Leesburg on Harmony Church Road. You can learn more about the farm on the Brookfield Dairy Facebook page or by visiting the Brookfield Dairy Ice Cream website.
