Armarc Farms, a family-owned business since 1963, is managed by Desiree Lee. Lee and Armarc Farms produce livestock feed for cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, and other poultry.
“My grandfather established the business years ago. He was milling for other people in the county and decided to start his own business venture. He acquired a few herds of cattle, pigs, and sheep and thought it would be more efficient to produce his own feed from the different types of grain he was already growing,” said Lee. The farm name “Armarc” is a combination of the name of Lee’s grandfather, O.D. Marcum, and his partner at the time, Maril Armor. After years of managing the farm and growing it into a profitable business, O.D. Marcum bought out his partner and added more leased land– creating the beautiful farm it is presently.
Lee grew up in the family business. “My grandfather and mom and uncles were all farmers– it’s a family affair. When you grow up on the farm, you enter right into working on one without even being asked. Work ethic and follow-through are instilled in you at a very young age,” she said.
Today, the family-run farm produces livestock feed sourced from grains grown by other local Loudoun Farmers as well. The farmers at Armarc Farms take great care in their work and produce precisely-calculated, nutrient-dense feeds and customized mineral packages, based on the best animal nutrition. Some minerals are harmful to certain species of animals, while other species might require the same mineral for proper development. Lee appreciates the knowledge she has gained over the years and emphasized the pride that comes with putting in a hard day at work.
“You learn a lot from farming. More by your failures than your actual success. You become more self-sufficient and end up with a product you can be proud of,” she said. Lee appreciates the ability to be outside all day, spring to fall. She enjoys seeing the changes that take place from putting the first seeds into the ground to performing the final harvest.
Armarc Farms produces shell corn, ewe feed, sow feed (for both gestation and lactation), hog feed, cattle feed, poultry feed, and more. The farm is located outside of Lovettsville on Mountain Road. It is open Monday through Friday.
